Choosing A Laptop For A Student
When selecting a laptop that’s used by a student, one important factor is to think about how the laptop will be used. Will you carry it around a lot? Then go for an ultraportable laptop. Will you need heavy computing power, i.e. is graphics and multimedia work is important to you? Then go for a heavier but more powerful machine. Do you just do basic word processing, email and general surfing? Then perhaps a simple, basic laptop will be most suitable.
Some Laptop Models to Consider
If you’re buying a laptop suitable for a college going student, I have a few models in mind. I went to the National University of Singapore (I’m staying in Singapore) to check out which laptops students were using there in order to come up with this list.
Thinkpad X61
The Thinkpad X61 is my own personal laptop computer. It works great and is an ultraportable. An ultraportable laptop is one which weighs very little but has powerful computing power. You have to pay a slight premium in price, but I think its worth every single cent. This is a solid laptop that can be used by students in any faculty or discipline.

Apple iBook
The Apple iBook is almost a fashion statement in itself. When I went around the university, I found that students that used the sleek, white Apple iBook tend to be students who are more fashionable and study the arts, law or commerce subjects. Basically, what I’m trying to say is – if you wanna look cool, then get the Apple iBook. However, its generally suited for the more simple tasks like word processing, email or web surfing. Of course, Apple has just launched the ultralight Apple MacBook Air – so you certainly want to look at that model if you’re headed in Apple’s direction.

Fujitsu LifeBook P7230
The Fujitsu LifeBook is another powerful machine that’s hard to ignore. I find that it has a solid build, with a sleek design that combines looks with computing power. Certainly something you can think about if you want something to carry around, be proud of and yet still able to use it for studies.

Conclusion
I know the above sounds like a shameless plug for PC Magazine, but their website gives such good reviews of laptops, I simply had to mention it. Go check out PC Magazine and see the laptops being discussed there. Bookmark it and soon you will be returning again and again to catch up on laptop and other computer technology.
