HP Pavilion HDX 18
Laptop Review

HP makes very good value-for-money laptops. I've always been impressed by the quality of their machines.

Lately, HP has been making waves by producing top-end multimedia laptops with very reasonable prices.

The HP Pavilion HDX 18 is one such laptop, packing great multimedia features into a 8.7 pound chassis and a huge 16:9 screen.

Let's now take a look at this laptop and its salient features - from its design, to its display, keyboard and controls, ports and connections, batteries and also its shortcomings.

1. Overview

The HP Pavilion HDX 18 comes with an a 2.8 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo T9600 processor, and is decked out with 4 GB of RAM. Add in a nVidia GeForce 8600M GT graphics card and a hard drive with 480 GB space, and you can see what a monster laptop this is. The most intensive games and multimedia applications should pose no problems for the HP Pavilion HDX 18 and you will also be able to enjoy Blu-Ray DVD discs. This is definitely one of the 'ultimate' gaming and multimedia laptops out there at the moment.

2. Design

Now let's look at the design of the HP Pavilion HDX 18. The HP Pavilion HDX 18 is weighs in at 8.7-pounds. A tad heavy? Perhaps - but if you consider the huge 18.4 inch screen, and the features packed into this baby, it is not that heavy at all. The competition in fact weighs a little heavier (e.g. the Acer Aspire 8920G).

Notice the nice scribbles on the chassis of the HDX 18

In the looks department, the HP Pavilion HDX 18 has some scribbles on the chassis, which makes for an interesting aesthetics. Dimensions wise, we're looking at 11.4 by 17.2 by 1.2 inches, which makes HDX 18 slimmar than the Aspire 8920G.

3. Display

The HDX 18 comes with a huge 18.4 inch widescreen, and provides a gorgeous 1,920 by 1,080 resolution. You will be able to watch movies in 1080p resolution (equivalent to that of a consumer HDTV). One of the things that really nice with such a wide screen is that you can do video or image editing and still have enough screen space to do Excel, Word, etc. without overlap. Cool stuff.

3. Keyboard and Other Controls

Ok, with the HP Pavilion HDX 18, you get a a numeric keypad, together with a super, nice-to-type keyboard. You'll find the mouse buttons depress nicely and stay silent. The other components in the HDX 18 are definitely worth a mention. You get a Blu-ray burner, an internal ATSC TV tuner(!) and also a dual-hard drive configuration (two 160GB drives). The Altec Lansing speakers also sound really amazing.

4. Ports and Connections

Connectivity wise, you get all the standard stuff you need - an eSATA port, an HDMI-out port, three USB ports and a memory card reader. Whatever you need to connect can surely be connected to this machine. Oh, did I mention it also comes with the state-of-the-art 802.11n wireless connectivity?

5. Battery Life

What about battery life? Well, the HDX 18 cranks out about 2 hours 48 minutes of juice before running dry. That's actually very reasonable for a 'desktop-replacement' laptop. If you need extra power, just purchase an additional battery pack.

6. Shortcomings

Really, I can't think of many shortcomings in the HP Pavilion HDX 18 laptop. Even in terms of cost, the unit sells for $2000. Which is certainly reasonable considering that Blu-ray drive, large screen and solid components. So, on the whole, its a great laptop - very little shortcomings whatsoever.

Conclusion

Well, I hope this article has helped you understand the HP Pavilion HDX 18 a bit better. What will really strike you about the HDX 18 is the awesome large screen, Blu-ray burner, as well as amazing components and connectivity options. Perhaps that's why this laptop has also won the PC Magazine's Editor's Choice award. So if you're looking for a desktop replacement laptop, with powerful features to run the most intensive games and multimedia, the HP Pavilion HDX 18 is a hard choice to beat.
