If you're new to wireless networks, it can be
a hassle trying to create a simple Wi-Fi connection on your laptop.
Without a Wi-Fi connection, you'd be losing
out on the benefits of your laptop's built-in wireless features (most
laptops have this feature nowadays).
This article will show you the steps for
setting up a Wi-Fi connection on your laptop so you can start surfing the
Internet with wireless abandon.
1. Switch on the Wireless
Functionality
To successfully set up a Wi-Fi connection, you need to have the proper equipment
in your laptop. Make sure your laptop has a built-in wireless card and make sure
it is turned on. Some of the laptops have an external switch to 'turn on'
wireless network functionality.
2. Find the SSID
Ok, with your wireless connection in the laptop switched on, the next step is to
find out the SSID of the wireless network you're trying to connect to. Usually,
wireless networks are password protected with what is called a WEP key. Make
sure you check up what this password is before you start configuring the Wi-Fi
connection.
2. Enable your Firewall
Program
An important next step is to ensure that your firewall program is turned on.
This will protect you from any snooping eyes once you get onto the network. I
personally use a freeware firewall program called
avast!, but you may have
your own favorite firewall program.
3. Look for the Wi-Fi
Network Icon
Once you are in the vicinity of the wireless network, you should see a Wi-Fi
network icon on the bottom right of your screen, as shown below. I'm assuming
you are using Windows XP, but the instructions for Windows Vista should not
differ much.
This is what you'll see when a wireless network is
nearby
Right-click this icon and then click View
Available Wireless Networks. The Wireless Network Connection window
should now appear, as shown below.
The Wireless Network Connection screen
You should be able to see your selected
wireless network listed. If you don't see the network, try clicking Refresh
network list over in the upper-left corner.
Next, select your desired network, and click on
Connect in the lower-right corner.
4. Enter the WEP Key
Windows XP will prompt you to enter the WEP key. Carefully type in the WEP key
you obtained earlier in both the Network key and Confirm network key
boxes, and then click Connect.
Within a few seconds, Windows XP should connect
to the wireless network you want. The Wi-Fi connection setup is complete - you
can now go and surf the Internet or check emails wirelessly!
Conclusion
I hope this article has shown you how to quickly
and easily creation a Wi-Fi connection on your laptop. Surfing the Internet
wirelessly is now so commonplace that the knowledge in this article is
absolutely critical. cyou need to visit the Bugis flea market. There are literally tons of things you can buy there and I seriously doubt you can finish the
